The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Atiku Abubakar, filed a lawsuit, and on Thursday, the hearing in that lawsuit was resumed by the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal.
The request for live coverage of the proceedings is currently being heard by the court.
The request, dated May 5 and filed on May 7, asking the court to permit the televising of the hearings, is significant given the “monumental national significance,” according to Chris Uche, counsel for Atiku and the PDP.
This goes along with requests for a court order outlining the specifics of its application.
According to him, the procedures won’t appear to be a circus but rather grave and serious business, and everyone will be able to observe them impartially.
Abubakar Mahmoud, the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) attorney, disagreed. Bringing cameras into the courtroom, according to him, would ruin its reverent atmosphere. He maintained that they prefer to complete their task in a sombre setting free from cameras in their faces.
He urged the court to deny the request for live coverage, arguing that it was unwarranted and unneeded.
In his defense, Bola Tinubu’s attorney Wole Olanipekun said that the petitioner is in court for serious matters and that it is unusual that the application will be made in the first place.
He continued by saying that the court is not a stadium, playhouse, or circus.
Additionally, Lateef Fagbemi, the APC’s attorney, claimed in his argument that broadcasting the hearings is similar to BBNaija (Big Brother Nigeria).
He continued by saying that some aspects of the proceedings are not recorded in places where live streaming is done.
According to Fagbemi, if the distinction between a trial for the public and a trial by the public is made, other tribunals will ask for the same ruling.
In Atiku’s request for the court hearings to be televised live, the judge reserved judgment.
On May 19, the same day that the Labour Party (LP)’s related application is heard, the court will issue its decision.
