The Niger Republic’s military junta has nominated former Economy Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine as Prime Minister.
This comes just two weeks after the military deposed Niger’s democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, and seized power.
On Monday night, the coup plotter declared this on television.
According to Nigerien media, Lamine Zeine was an ex-Minister of Economy and Finance in former President Mamadou Tandja’s cabinet before his ouster in 2010, and now works as an economist for the African Development Bank in Chad.
The Economic Community of West African States’ (ECOWAS) deadline to the coup plotters to reinstate Bazoum expired over the weekend.
