Berylson, the chairman and owner of Millwall, died at the age of 70 after “a tragic accident” he was involved in.
On Tuesday, July 4, the Championship team issued a statement on Twitter confirming the news, but they did not provide any other information regarding the 70-year-old’s passing.
The American businessman joined the club in 2006 and in 2007 he became a sizable shareholder. He is survived by his wife Amy and his three children, Jennifer, James and Elizabeth.
In a statement, the club stated;
“We announce the demise of our cherished owner and chairman, John Berylson, with a shattered heart and the sincerest grief.
“Everyone at the club is praying for John Berylson, who tragically lost his life on Tuesday morning. John, who turned 70 last month, leaves behind his wife Amy, their three children Jennifer, James, and Elizabeth, as well as the rest of the Berylson family.
“John’s abrupt and tragic death will undoubtedly have an impact on everyone who was lucky enough to have met him. He was an exceptional individual who was immensely committed to his family and possessed a fantastic sense of warmth, compassion, and love.
“He lived a storied life, one full of colour and joy, and was infinitely thoughtful of others with an endless desire to share his immense knowledge and experiences to help people.
“Millwall has had great success and stability under John’s committed leadership and direction.
“He has presided over some of the most memorable events in Millwall’s history since initially getting associated with the club in 2006, and his contribution to setting the stage for those events was immense.
“John was talking excitedly about the upcoming season and his plans for the future, and any future success will be in his honor and remembrance. His legacy will be that.
“John took great pleasure in the club’s reputation as an underdog. He cherished Millwall supporters and felt a strong connection to their ideals and identity. He was deeply devoted to all of his employees, and both they and his fan base will sincerely miss him.”
