The country’s security and intelligence agencies claim to have thwarted a coup attempt on Tuesday.
The declaration was made by the military administration in a statement that its spokeswoman, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo, read on national television.
The junta claimed in the statement that an attempt by some army commanders to overthrow Capt. Ibrahim Traoré threw the country into anarchy and was stopped.
Additionally, it stated that officers who were allegedly complicit in the plot had been detained.
“The dark intention of attacking the institutions of the Republic and plunging our country in chaos… investigations will help unmask the instigators of this plot.
“Officers and other alleged actors involved in this attempt at destabilisation have been arrested and others are actively sought,” it said.
The military government stated that it will work to shed as much light as possible on this conspiracy and expressed regret “that officers whose oath is to defend their homeland have strayed into an undertaking of this nature”.
Recall that in September 2022, Capt. Ibrahim Traoré, the interim president of Burkina Faso, overthrew another military government.
It was the nation’s second coup in an effort to combat an Islamist insurgency.
