Japa: 128,770 Nigerian students move to UK in seven years

According to an examination of data acquired from the UK’s Higher Education Statistics Agency, there were 128,770 Nigerian students enrolled in British universities between 2015 and 2022.

Over the years, more Nigerian children have attended school in an effort to improve their quality of life and education.

16,100 Nigerians, according to figures for the 2015–2016 academic year, were enrolled in UK universities.

Only 12,655 Nigerians signed up for classes during the 2016–17 academic year, a significant fall that analysts attribute to the recession in Nigeria.

In 2017/2018, the number of enrolled Nigerians reduced to 10,685 while it rose marginally to 10,810 during the 2018/2019 academic session.

The enrollment for the academic year 2019–2020 was 13,020 students, while the enrollment for the year 2020–2021 was 21,305 students, an increase of 64%.

Since Nigeria’s independence in 1960, 44,195 students have been enrolled for the 2021/2022 academic year, according to the most recent data made public by HESA.

According to a breakdown of the HESA figures, Nigeria came in third place behind China and India among the top 10 foreign student lists.

According to information acquired, the migration of Nigerian students to overseas universities has continued to be advantageous for the foreign tertiary institutions hosting them as well as their home nations.

The UK is about to publish new regulations that would likely prevent students from Nigeria and other countries studying in the UK from bringing their families over.
