‘I’ll be back stronger,’ Tobi Amusan reacts after 100m World title defeat

Tobi Amusan of Nigeria promised her supporters that she would return “stronger” the following year after losing the global women’s 100-meter hurdles title to Danielle Williams of Jamaica on Thursday, August 24, in Budapest.

Danielle Williams of Jamaica won the competition in a season-best time of 12.43 seconds, ahead of Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico in second place and Kendra Harrison of the United States in third place in 12.46 seconds.

Despite a slow start, the world hurdles record holder recovered in time, finishing in 12.56 seconds, beating out competitors Achkara Nungent of Jamaica and Nadine Visser of the Netherlands.

Amusan finished sixth in 12.62 seconds in her third straight final.

Amusan stated it was quite “a journey getting into the final” considering everything she had been through in the previous few weeks in a post-game interview with journalists.

The 2022 gold medalist told reporters that “God, my team, and my family” had been instrumental.

She thanked all of her supporters for sticking by her through the highs and lows and vowed to come back stronger.

Next year, Amusan hopes to receive her “medal” back.

“Yeah, it’s a tough one; nobody likes to lose but considering what I have gone through in the past couple of months, I’m so grateful that I came out,” she said.
