Bola Tinubu, the next president of Nigeria, has promised not to let Nigerians down when he takes office on May 29. At the Presidential Villa in Abuja on May 25, President Buhari presented Tinubu with the National Honor of Grand Commander of the Order of Federal Republic (GCFR).
Assuring the President and Nigerians that he would not let them down, Tinubu said he understood the significance of the honor and the work that lay ahead.
“I am a humble individual who benefits from the assistance and kindness of the Nigerian people. We have earned the trust of the populace. Mr. President, you’ve done your part. Currently, I must perform that significant function. I am aware of what the work at hand and the honor bestowed upon me today signify.
“I have to compete in this race, and I have to win. We must achieve progress in security, the economy, agriculture, jobs, education, health, power, and in all other areas. No less is acceptable in their eyes. I won’t let them or you down in this, Mr. President,” he declared.
President Buhari was praised by Tinubu for paying tribute to the late MKO Abiola, the winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election that was later declared invalid.
“One of these decisions was to declare June to be Democracy Day, acknowledge the unfairness of the 1993 election’s annulment, and honor the late MKO Abiola with the country’s highest honor. As much as anybody could, you went back in time to correct the record and bind up a gaping hole.”
