Elon Musk rebrands Twitter’s icon blue bird logo to ‘X” after 17 years

After over 17 years as the company’s emblem, Elon Musk, and Twitter Chief Executive Officer Linda Yaccarino have replaced it with the new “x” symbol.

X is present! Let’s do this,” Yaccarino said in a tweet on Monday, July 24, along with a photo of the new corporate logo.

The image of Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters with the company’s new “X” logo cast on it was posted by the billionaire entrepreneur on Twitter.

As of the time of publication, the blue bird is still visible across the social media site, but Yaccarino’s and Musk’s Twitter profiles now both bear the “X” emblem.

After asking his 149 million followers to send him a “good enough X logo” earlier that morning, Musk updated his profile image to the company’s “interim X logo” on Sunday night.

When asked why he was considering the shake-up during a Twitter audio live stream early on Sunday, Musk responded, “It should have been done a long time ago.” I apologize for taking so long.

The logo chosen by the Tesla CEO was provided by Sawyer Merritt, who also revealed that Alex Tourville’s “now discontinued” X Pod logo served as an inspiration for the design.

“I created the video above using the font logo, adding a glow and little lines in the logo to make it look ‘imperfect’,” Merritt replied under the video of Twitter’s new logo tweeted by Musk on Sunday.

Musk said that “X” works together with his “everything app,” a messaging and payment platform similar to WeChat, the fifth most popular social media app worldwide and the most widely used in Asia.

“It’s an exceptionally rare thing – in life or in business – that you get a second chance to make another big impression,” Yaccarino tweeted on Saturday as the big announcement of the logo change loomed.

“Twitter has a profound impact and altered how we interact. The worldwide town square will now undergo additional transformation thanks to X.”

After acquiring ownership of the company in October 2022 for a stunning $44 billion, Musk changed the company’s name to X Corporation in March and plans to further revolutionize the social media platform.
