Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) late Friday, just after President Bola Tinubu had suspended him.
Emefiele’s suspension by President Tinubu was not surprising to many because the beleaguered CBN governor has received harsh criticism for allegedly mismanaging the country’s monetary policy.
His suspension was announced in a statement that stated the decision was made in light of an “ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.”
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation’s Director of Information, Willie Bassey, stated that Emefiele’s suspension took effect right away.
After the suspension, the DSS moved quickly to arrest Emefiele, purportedly so that he could be questioned.
