The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has been counseled not to pursue military involvement in the Niger Republic by Nasir El-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State.
President Bola Tinubu, the head of ECOWAS, declared that if the coup leaders in Niger do not hand over control to ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, the organization will use force.
ECOWAS announced on Thursday that it had started activating its standby force in Niger following a meeting of the bloc’s defense leaders in Accra, the capital of Ghana.
El-Rufai, however, asserted that military involvement would result in a war among brothers in a tweet he posted today.
“As ECOWAS beats the drums of war, I recall the 1970s rock classic by Dire Straits – ‘Brothers in Arms’, because a war within our subregion is a war between brothers.
“Indeed, the people of Niger Republic are one and the same with those living in Northern Nigeria. Let us bend therefore over backwards to avoid this civil war between brothers,” he wrote.
