The renaming of 15 airports after well-known Nigerians was authorized by outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Head of Press and Public Affairs at the Ministry of Aviation, Odutayo Oluseyi, made this information available to the media on Sunday.

The statement lists the airports as Akure International Airport named after Olumuyiwa Bernard Aliu; Benin International Airport now known as Oba Akinzua ii; Dutse International Airport renamed Muhammed Nuhu Sanusi; Ebonyi International Airport Okadigbo now known as Chuba Wilberforce; and Gombe International Airport renamed Brigadier Zakari Maimalari.

Samuel Ladoke Akintola, General Tunde Abdullahi Idiagbon, Gen. Hassan Usman Katsina, and President Muhammadu Buhari were all at the international airports in Ibadan, Ilorin, Kaduna, and Maiduguri, respectively.

Others include the renaming of the Makurdi International Airport after Joseph Sarwuan Tarka, the Minna International Airport after Mall. Abubakar Imam, the Nasarrawa International Airport after Sheikh Usman Danfodio, the Osubi International Airport after Alfred Diete Spiff, the Port Harcourt International Airport after Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo, and the Yola International Airport now known as the Lamido Aliyu Mustapha Airport.
