BREAKING: Court nullifies Alex Otti’s candidature

The election of Dr. Alex Otti as governor-elect of Abia State and all other candidates for the Labour Party in Abia and Kano States has been thrown out by a Federal High Court in Kano presided over by Justice M. N. Yunusa.

Their appearance was deemed to be in violation of the terms of the 2022 electoral legislation by the court.

The verdict rendered by the court was acquired on Friday morning.

The Labour Party’s failure to provide the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, with its membership register within 30 days of the primaries rendered the process invalid, according to the court in Suit No. FHC/KN/CS/107/2023 brought by Mr. Ibrahim Haruna Ibrahim against the parties.

The Judge decided that “the votes credited to the 1st defendant are a wasted vote” because “the party that has not complied with the provisions of the electoral act cannot be said to have candidate in an election and cannot be declared winner of an election.”
