The petition filed by the Labour Party and Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate, against the president-elect Bola Tinubu, has been postponed till next Wednesday, May 17.
A ruling was made by the court regarding the petitioners’ request for an adjournment.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), President-elect Bola Tinubu, Vice-President-elect Kashim Shettima, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are listed as the petition’s first through fourth respondents.
As soon as the case’s hearings got underway again, Obi and the LP informed the court that the parties had met and decided to request an extension so they could file and exchange the relevant legal paperwork.
He informed the court that numerous procedures and motions had still to be submitted in the case.
The adjournment, according to Uzoukwu, SAN, will allow for a swift hearing and decision on the issue.
“My Lords, we convened and determined that the matter should be continued until next Wednesday so that we can be certain the processes are ready for hearing when we reconvene.
Uzoukwu continued, “We also decided that before then, we will meet and decide on documents that are not in dispute and documents that are.”
For its side, INEC acknowledged through its attorney, Mr. A. B. Mahmood (SAN), that the parties had met and decided to request a postponement following a brief discussion they held on Wednesday afternoon.
The delay was required, according to Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), the attorney for Tinubu and Shettima. “So that when we come on Wednesday all the applications will be ready for adoption,” he continued.
The APC’s legal representative, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), stated that his client thought the adjournment would speed up the procedures.
After hearing from each party, the five-member panel, presided over by Justice Haruna Tsammani, agreed to the request for an adjournment.
The court instructed the parties to decide on the petition’s main issues.
It then put the case on hold so the pre-hearing discussion could continue.
