Being the son of the late Afrobeats icon, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, made education “depressing” for Grammy-nominated Nigerian singer Femi Kuti.
The multi-instrumentalist claimed that several instructors and classmates tried to humiliate and bully him because of his father’s excesses, but he refused to be humiliated.
He revealed this in an interview with well-known media figure Chude Jideonwo.
“School was a really terrible period for me, he admitted, since there were instructors who loved my father, Fela and those who didn’t. As a result, if I got into problems with a teacher who disliked my father, that instructor would likely beat me. Later, I understood that they held a grudge against my father.
“Remember that the elite’s children attended the school. Therefore, because I was Fela’s son, the wealthy kids in the school didn’t like me. They would remark, “Your father wears pants and smokes Igbo [Indian hemp].” I would respond, “Your father too is a slave,” in response.
“My mouth was sharp, like a razor. If you abuse my father, you’ll be crying by the time I abuse you.”
