Abdul Rasheed Bawa, the head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, has been placed on indefinite leave by President Bola Tinubu.

This comes after serious claims of office abuse were made against him.

Bawa was instructed to turn over control of his office’s business to the Director of Operations of the Commission right away.

Bawa’s suspension was based on serious charges of abuse of office made against him, said Willie Bassey, Director, Information, SGF office, in a succinct statement released on Wednesday.

“Mr. Bawa has been directed to immediately handover the affairs of his office to the Director, Operations in the Commission, who will oversee the affairs of the Office of the Chairman of the Commission pending the conclusion of the investigation,” the statement said.

New EFCC Interim Chairman, Mohammed Umar Abba

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has appointed Mohammed Umar Abba as acting chairman.

His appointment comes after President Bola Tinubu suspended AbdulRasheed Bawa, the head of the EFCC, on Wednesday evening, June 14. The suspension of Bawa, according to the presidency, would enable a thorough inquiry into his behavior while in office in the wake of some serious charges of abuse of authority made against him by several key players in the anti-corruption movement.
